Strokes and Chiropractic

Is Chiropractic safe?

Stoke from Chiropractic? or accident?

“A coroner has determined that Playboy model and “Queen of Snapchat” Katie May died in February at 34 years of age from a stroke after a chiropractor treatment ruptured one of her arteries while manipulating her neck.” -Forbes

Many of you have already asked:

“Did you see the Playboy model who died after visiting a Chiropractor?”

“Doc I’m concerned… Doc is it safe…? Doc I’m not sure if I want my neck adjusted now”

These are just a sample of the comments that I have heard over the last week after Yahoo released an article on Katie May, a former Playboy model who suffered a stroke in January of this year.

Let me break down why this is a far more complicated issue than the article alludes to.

Katie May

Katie sadly passed away on Feb 1st, 2016 after suffering a spontaneous carotid dissection. She also suffered from a fall during a photoshoot just days prior and as she tweeted she felt like she had a “pinched nerve” in her neck. She had visited the hospital was discharged and saw a chiropractor the next day.

The coroner’s report stated that Katie had suffered a carotid dissectionrelated to neck trauma. One thing that has to be understood is there is very little correlation with stroke and Chiropractic. The correlation in literature surrounds the vertebral basilar artery not the carotid. Chiropractic has never been implicated in the medical literature for a role in carotid dissection. It would take a substantial amount of force to cause a carotid desiccation. The Chiropractic Adjustment is just not force full enough to cause this kind of damage!

Vertebral Basilar Artery:

There is very little evidence to suggest a correlation of the risk of stroke and Chiropractic care. The statics do not support a causative relationship.  Most of the literature suggests that the correlative nature of chiropractic and stroke has to do with the early symptoms of a stroke. For example some of the earlier symptoms of stroke are headaches and neck pain, two of the most common reasons a patient will see a Chiropractor. Sadly those patients are already having a stroke and would have had one had they seen a chiropractor or not. For this reason strokes in a Chiropractic office  are no more frequent then the family physicians office.

Here is one example of the nonsense I have read on line surrounding this case.

“She really didn’t need to have her neck adjusted, and it killed her,” Passanisi said. “And the scary thing is that the nurse told me it happens all the time.”

Here are a few examples of the statistics related to stroke:

Risk of Stroke:

  • Chiropractic Manipulation: .0000000012% or 3 in 165,000,000
  • Getting Hair Cut: .00003 % or 3 in 100,000
  • Neck Surgery: .0001% or 1 in 10,000

Note: Statistics sourced from the New England Journal of Medicine.

Department of Neurosurgery, Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Concluded in Feb of 2016:

“There is no convincing evidence to support a causal link between chiropractic manipulation and CAD.”

“And the scary thing is that the nurse told me it happens all the time.”

Based on what you have read is it reasonable to conclude that this is an event that happens all the time?

I do not believe that a 3 in 165,000,000 occurrence rate is enough to conclude it happens all the time!

Compare that to the relative risk of death related to combined NSAIDS / ASPRIN use of 153 per 1,000,000 it’s hard to even draw a statistical comparison of risk. You are far more likely to die from your Aspirin than a neck adjustment.

The relative risk vs benefit is so far tipped in favor of the manipulation. While there will always be a certain group of people who are at greater risk of suffering a stroke, the Chiropractor is well trained to screen for and refer out as necessary.

I hope this clears up some of the real data surrounding Chiropractic and stroke. This is just another example of sensation sells and the media is running with it.

The Most Important Health Secret!

Think I’m exaggerating?
The proof is in the research!

Chronic DiseaseChronic disease is at epidemic levels in this country, yet we spend more money on health care then any other modernized country.  Clearly there is a break down between money spent and health outcomes. Let me digress; This is by no means an attack article on traditional medicine. All forms of medicine have their place in treating patients. But the reality is we have a very sick population, a population that suffers from chronic headaches, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, diabetes, heart disease the list goes on and on!

I have been remise to not share with you the power of Chiropractic. Chiropractic is so much more then just a means of pain relief and I hope to be able to share with you a few published articles in Medical Journals that illustrate the power of Chiropractic.

Chronically elevated stress hormones have been linked to a host of disease including but not limited to cancer, glaucoma, bi-polar disorder, type I & type II diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune disease, osteoarthritis, excessive body weight, hypertension, asthma, immune system function. (“Autonomic and Autocoid Pharmacology” 2009)

In the study  “Cerebral metabolic Stresschanges in men after chiropractic spinal manipulation” “Alternative Therapies Health Medicine”(Ogura 2011)(2), they found that onesingle adjustment improved metabolic changes in the brain and reduced stress hormones.THIS WAS AFTER ONE ADJUSTMENT! The implications of this study can not be overstated!

In 2007 there was a huge break though in chiropractic research “Atlas vertebra realignment and achievement of arterial pressure goal in hypertensive patients” Journal of Human Hypertension (2007) 21, 347–352. was published in the Journal of Hypertension(7). This study showed that the Chiropractic adjustment was able to produce a reduction in both systolic (17mmHg) and diastolic (10mmHg) blood pressure that was sustainable over a 8 week period with “no adverse effects”.

Still not buying it?

Posture has a direct correlation with health!  In this study “The impact of positive sagittal balance in adult spinal deformity” published in SPINE 2005 Sep 15;30(18):2024-9. The authors (none of which were Chiropractors) found that the worse a patients posture was on full spine X-ray the worse the patients health measure were, and conversely the better the patients posture the more predictive it was that the patient had better health markers. All Chiropractic adjustments help restore posture by improving spinal movement!

In the study titled “Clinical utilization and cost outcomes from an integrative medicine independent physician association: an additional 3-year update.” published in JMPT was a 7 year study that observed the clinical and cost utilization of patients who used a Chiropractor as a Primary Care Provider (PCP) vs. a conventional Medical Doctor.

The results were astonishing those who had a Chiropractor as a PCP demonstrated decreasesSave Money of 60.2% in-hospital admissions, 59.0% less hospital days, 62.0% less outpatient surgeries and procedures, and 85% less pharmaceutical costs in those who had Chiropractors as a PCP when compared with Conventional MD as a PCP in the same geography and time frame. This shows the massive power Chiropractic has to save you money!

I hope this helps illustrate the power of Chiropractors! It is so much more than pain and symptoms, its about health!

Neck Pain, Back Pain, Sciatica, Headaches, Arm Pain, Leg Pain

What is “Text Neck” and How Do I fix It?

What is “Text Neck”?

Text Neck is an overuse syndrome that affects the posture of your upper spine and neck. More specifically it’s a loss of curve to the cervical spine that causes the onset of postural syndromes like “Upper Cross Syndrome” which is a series of both muscle spasm and muscle weakness. This change in posture can present itself as a myriad of symptoms most commonly Chronic Neck Pain, Head Aches, Muscle Soreness etc. But the effects of poor posture can be much more detrimental than pain syndromes. In a study titled “The impact of positive sagittal balance in adult spinal deformity” published in SPINE 2005 Sep 15;30(18):2024-9, the authors found that the further the participant’s posture was from normal on full spine X-Ray, the worse health outcomes those participants had. Measures of health included participants current health complaints as well as current diagnosis like diabetes, hypertension etc. The authors determined the worse your posture is the more likely you were to have a negative health outcome! POSTURE POSTURE POSTURE! You have direct control over your posture.

What Causes Text Neck?

As I stated before it is an overuse syndrome, but what does that mean. It means anything you do on a daily basis that exerts the same force on the spine.  For a landscaper, it may be a bent over posture that leads to low back pain. In this case, we are referring to the posture a person holds themselves when texting, but it can be extended to poor body mechanics while typing, using your tablets, or sitting at your desk at work. The posture that causes “text neck” is a stooped, rounded posture of the upper spine, often encompasses rounding of the shoulders and your neck bent forward. Did you know as your head translates forward it increases the weight of the head exponentially?; a 15 degree translation makes your head have the same exertion force as 3 gallons of milk, a 30 degree translation equates to a 5 gallon jug of water, and a 45 degree translation forces your neck to support the equivalent of 2 CAR TIRES!

What Can I Do About It?

There are a handful of exercises that just about anyone can do to help combat these posture changes. These exercises are sourced from, this series of exercises for “Text Neck” were put together by Dr. Justin Johnson of Family Care Chiropractic in Malvern, PA.

Starting Position  Movement
Begin by positioning yourself in a seated or standing position. Place palm of hand against side of head above ear.
Activate core. Attempt to side bend head into hand. There should be minimal to no neck movement as muscles contract. Hold for recommended duration. Repeat as instructed.

Starting Position  Movement
Begin by positioning yourself in a seated or standing position. Place right and left hands making a fist underneath chin.
Activate core. Attempt to flex the head downward into the hands without excessive neck movement. Hold for recommended duration. Repeat as instructed.

Starting Position  Movement
Begin by positioning yourself in a seated or standing position. Place hand on side of face in the cheek region.
Activate core. Attempt to rotate head in towards hand. There should be minimal to no neck movement as muscles contract. Hold for recommended duration. Repeat as instructed.

Starting Position  Movement
Begin by positioning yourself in a seated position with one hand grasping side of chair while the other hand is gently contacting the top of your head.
Gently tilt your head forward as your chin drops down towards your chest. Then slightly rotate head to one side until a stretch is felt in neck as the hand on top of your head pulls gently to slightly increase the stretch sensation. Attention should be paid not to elevate opposite side shoulder. Hold for recommended duration and repeat as instructed.

 Starting Position  Movement
Place both forearms on door frame, with elbows bent at 90º. Elbows should be slightly below shoulder level.
While maintaining forearm contact, lean body into doorway until gentle stretch is felt in the chest and shoulder. Hold for 20-30 seconds or for recommended duration and repetitions.

Starting Position  Movement
Begin standing with shoulder blades flat against wall. Place arms against wall with elbows below shoulder level, bent to 90º with palms facing forward.
While attempting to maintain forearm contact with wall, slide arms upward, squeezing shoulder blades together. Once forearm can no longer maintain contact with wall, slowly return to start position. Repeat prescribed repetitions and sets.

The low down on Cardiovascular Health

The heart is more than just a love symbol!

The heart is so much more than a symbol of love. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to keep that heart “ticking”.

It is common knowledge the cardiovascular system plays an important role in the very foundation of life. It is also common knowledge that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the US, and continues to grow despite advances in pharmaceutical intervention and early screening / intervention. In a Centers of Disease Control (CDC) report it was stated that heart disease killed 611,105 people in 2013, that is 1,674 people a day die from complications of cardiovascular disease.

So what can you do? This article will provide you with 3 steps you can take in your daily life, that will have an impact on your heart health.

Stick with me this isn’t the same information you have read since the 80’s I promise!

More and more evidence is pointing to a totally different approach to diet and heart disease, so hear me out for just a few. One of the major villains in cardiovascular disease has been cholesterol, and its role in Atherosclerosis. A.D.A.M. Medical Encyclopedia describes Atherosclerosis as “When fat, cholesterol, and other substances build up in the walls of arteries and form hard structures called plaques. Over time, these plaques can block the arteries and cause problems throughout the body.” One of the major problems this build up can cause is heart attacks and strokes! Cholesterol has for the last 30 years been artificially lowered with Statin drugs in order to reduce atherosclerosis. The problem with this approach is tri-fold.  First, cholesterol is an important component of normal physiology, cholesterol is essential to hormone production and transportation among many other things.  Secondly, cholesterol is not the root cause of the issue, but nearly a by product of an inflammatory process. In an article titled Clinical Cardiology: New Frontiers the authors state “Atherosclerosis, formerly considered a bland lipid storage disease, actually involves an ongoing inflammatory response. Recent advances in basic science have established a fundamental role for inflammation in mediating all stages of this disease from initiation through progression and, ultimately, the thrombotic complications of atherosclerosis.” Lastly, Statins are not as safe as once thought. What does this mean? WE HAVE BEEN GOING ABOUT THE TREATMENT WRONG FOR THE LAST 30 YEARS!  The two major dietary recommendations for managing cholesterol is reduced/no fat diet and a high fiber diet. Why? Because fats increase cholesterol, and fiber binds to it and helps the body excrete it. Seems reasonable, except when you factor inflammation into the equation. There are many well known Anti-Inflammatory foods, some of those foods include Avocados, Olive Oil, Salmon, Flax Seeds, Almonds, Coconut oil etc. What are all of these foods full of? They are full of fat!  They are the very foods that can help reduce your inflammatory load and help prevent cardiovascular disease, however, our traditional approach is to remove patients from these beneficial fats along with the less desirable fats with little to no consideration for what good fats can do. The other major misstep in traditional management of high cholesterol is increase your consumption of grains because they are fibrous and will bind to the cholesterol and help you excrete it.

The BIG issue here is the number one consumed grain is wheat, which has a multitude of issues in and of itself.

It is rare that a problem is as simple as saying grains are inflammatory, however, that is not enough. There are a couple of reasons increasing your grain (specifically wheat) consumption is bad. The first reason, our wheat today is not the same wheat that even your parent’s parents use to eat. The vast majority of the wheat on the market today are called dwarf wheat, they are a wheat that has been genetically manipulated to be more hearty and yield more wheat per crop season. It was such an advancement that it won the Nobel prize in the 50’s. However, this advancement did indeed feed the world as it was intended, but it came with some side effects that we are just now beginning to really understand the effects of. Mainly, they are significantly more starchy than its predecessor and thereby increases its glycemic load and triggering inflammatory cytokines. “Food for thought” Two pieces of bread raises your blood glucose by more than 2 tablespoons of table sugar. Secondly, GLUTEN, GLUTEN, GLUTEN!  Gluten has got a bad rap as of late and rightfully so. You will find many naysayers online that will claim gluten is not a problem unless you have Celiac disease. However, on the contrary, significant evidence dating back 20 years supports that Gluten is, in fact, inflammatory to the vast majority of the population not just patients with Celiac disease.

The diet I recommend in my office is a Paleo / Mediterranean Diet in most cases. As always, consult with your doctor to determine what diet is best for you. Both of these lifestyles are proponents of whole foods, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds berries, good fats and animal proteins. The concept here is if you can hunt, grow or gather the food you are eating then you can eat it. If it’s made in a factory and only resembles food, it’s not food, so stay away from it!

No kidding right? Same old song and dance, but in reality the first step in treating heart disease is prevention. Heart disease is a lifestyle disease and is propagated by our western diet and sedentary lifestyle. A simple Google search will yield result after result of peer-reviewed journal results for the reduction of cardiovascular risk in the active and fit population. In an American Heart Association Article, they stated “Scientific evidence linking regular physical activity to various measures of cardiovascular health. The prevailing view in these reports is that more active or fit individuals tend to develop less coronary heart disease (CHD) than their sedentary counterparts.” So simply put, get moving, coordinate with your doctor on how much exercise you need and get out there and get moving. Motion is life! It may be as little as 10 min a day that you can do initially, but you will progress over time, so do not get discouraged.

Supplements are either hailed or villainized in our culture but I will attempt to offer up some insight on which supplements have the greatest cardiovascular benefits and support that with peer reviewed literature. However, supplements are just that, they are meant to supplement a healthy diet and exercise. You must do the foundational changes discussed above.

One indicator for cardiovascular health is your Blood Pressure (BP). Hypertension or high blood pressure is defined as 140 mmHg over 90 mmHg. One of the natural products I use in my office to lower blood pressure is a product by the name Bio-CardioSirt BP. This product is a patent pending blend of 7 micro-nutrients, that have been clinically proven to lower blood pressure. In a study at the Hypertension Institute in Nashville, this product was shown to lower both Systolic (top number of your BP) and Diastolic (the bottom number of your BP) by 15.9 mmHg and 11.35 mmHg respectively after 4 weeks of use with no other lifestyle intervention. In the journal article titled: Updated meta-analytical approach to the efficacy of anti-hypertensive drugs in reducing blood pressure. The authors looked at the the top anti-hypertensive drugs on the market and the best ones lowered the Systolic BP by 22 mmHg and Diastolic by 11 mmHg over an 8-12 week prior. This natural remedy showed results nearly as good as the best pharmaceutical drug on the market just 4 weeks after its use as opposed to 8-12 weeks! With that said I would expect at the 8-12 week mark we would continue to see a positive change in BP using Bio-CardioSirt BP, and the gap between natural and pharmaceutical intervention would diminish.

The next biggest bang for your buck is Fish Oil’s, more specifically Omega 3 Fatty Acid’s. The positive effects Omega 3 fatty acids have on Cardiovascular health have been well studied. Omega 3 fatty acids have two main components, Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). These have the greatest effect on cardiovascular health.  When you are looking at fish oils you must consider a few things. The first is how much EPA and DHA does it have? In my office I generally recommend no less then 2000 Mg of combined EPA and DHA, sometimes more and sometimes less depending on the individuals medical history, this is a generally safe and therapeutic dose.

I hope this has provided you with a few ways you can positively impact your cardiovascular health. Please remember to always consult your physician before making any lifestyle changes. If you would like to discuss your cardiovascular health with Dr. Johnson please call Family Care Chiropractic and Wellness Center at 610-644-1191.

Neck Pain, Back Pain, Sciatica, Headaches, Arm Pain, Leg Pain

Migraines, Arthritis, Eczema…What do they all have in common?

Toxic Food Syndrome

You might be thinking, “what in the world do all of these have in common”. Yes, they are all conditions that plague millions of people in our country,  but there is more! Did you know they can all be caused by something called “Toxic Food Syndrome?” I’m not even referring to the junk processed and refined foods that your mind immediately runs to. While these foods are not good for you, this article isn’t just another one of those “holier than though”, “high and mighty”, “lay off the fast food and eat green beans” articles. No, this is an article on immunology and how your body can build up an immune response to even good healthy foods.

Immunology 101

Let’s talk about the difference between immunoglobulin E (IgE) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses. Typically when we talk about food allergies we think about people who suffer from peanut allergies, you know the reason you can’t have peanuts on a plane. That is an IgE response known as a Type I Hypersensitivity reaction. There is a cascade of events when exposed to an allergen occurs before an IgE response takes place. “IgE is the class of immunoglobulin characterized by ε heavy chains. It is involved in allergic reactions(1).” These types of reactions are characterized by both local and systemic as well as mild to sometimes life-threatening symptoms.  A good example of an IgE-mediated reaction would be “Hay Fever” which classically presents with watery itchy eyes, runny nose, and even an itchy throat. These are very fast sometimes even immediate reactions to exposure.  When the whole body is involved the patient suffers what we know as anaphylaxes, which is a potentially a life-threatening situation.

All of that said, just to differentiate  I am not talking about a “Food Allergy” What we are discussing in this article is IgG mediated responses that are characterized by chronic exposure and are really related to inflammation. Let’s take a minute to understand what an IgG reaction is. IgG reactions are triggered through a type III  hypersensitivity reaction, where the exposure to an allergen triggers the formation of inflammatory cytokines. This cascade of events can take hours to weeks to complete, therefore, it is considered a delayed reaction. This makes it extremely hard to do an elimination diet and see real accurate results. An elimination diet is when you eliminate certain food from your diet for a period of time and then slowly reintroduce the foods one by one over a period of time in order to see if they bring on any negative side effects. The problem with this approach is you may reintroduce a food like apples and have no symptoms for 2 weeks and on the day you start to feel some symptoms, related to the apple, you will relate it to the food you re-introduced in the last day or so.  Some of the more common symptoms you may feel when you have this type of reaction, “include joint pain, chronic headaches, fatigue, eczema, and psoriasis (and so many others), …are associated with food allergy(3).” In the study titled “Food elimination based on IgG antibodies in irritable bowel syndrome: a randomized controlled trial” they came to the conclusion(2)” “Food elimination based on IgG antibodies may be effective in reducing IBS symptoms and is worthy of further biomedical research(2).” This is just another example of how removing allergens temporarily from an inflamed system can aid in patients health and well being.

How do you know if you suffer from Toxic Food Syndrome?

Simple! We run blood work and look for specific markers that relate to Toxic Food Syndrome! It can be done in the office with a simple prick of the finger or a more comprehensive profile can be run through a lab. Both tests are reasonably priced considering the vital information we receive regarding your health. I will tell you a quick little story on how much of an impact removing food allergies can do for a patient. I have permission from my patient’s guardian to share this story: Pediatric patient under 24 months, history of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Had his IgG markers ran in my office and he had just under 30 reactive foods on his results as being potentially offensive to his body. After 2 weeks of removing the reactive foods and staying on a 4-day rotation diet containing only the foods that were nonreactive his mother has reported he has gained 6-8 words. Now we still have plenty of other work to do with his gut and immune system but you can see the profound impact removing offensive foods from your diet can have on your health. While IgG responses to food are not well understood in the medical literature as it is not the bodies primary response to an allergen, I can tell you that clinically I see results quite frequently in my patients when we identify these markers and avoid them.

If you have any questions regarding this test or any of the other testing I do in my office please reach out for a free 10 min telephone consult. Call my office at 610-644-1191 to schedule an appointment.

Bacteria = Health?

Bacteria = Health?

Did you say Bacteria = Health? The answer is YES! Typically we think of bacteria as detrimental to our health, while that is true to a certain extent when we consider pathogenic bacteria, there is a host of bacteria that are integral to your overall health and function of your immune system. I’m talking about your Gut Flora, also known as Probiotics, Intestinal MicroFlora or Microbiome.

It Starts at Birth and Continues For a Life Time

We have all heard the breastfed babies are typically sick less and it is “better” for the baby. We are just now starting to learn why this is true, and one of the many components of breast milk that makes a difference is the flora that is passed from mother to child during breastfeeding. In the study, A metagenomic study of diet-dependent interaction between gut microbiota and host in infants reveals differences in immune response the authors stated: “Early microbial colonization in infants is critically important for directing neonatal intestinal and immune development, and is especially attractive for studying the development of human-commensal interactions(1).” They found that breastfed babies displayed a variety of strains of bacteria as compared to bottle-fed babies, nd that the breast fed babies also displayed a significantly higher number of genetic markers that relate to the function of the immune system (1). “We demonstrate that differences in diet can affect, via gut colonization, host expression of genes associated with the innate immune system (1).” We are also starting to see evidence the the micro flora may play a role in the symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders, in the article  Microbiota Modulate Behavioral and Physiological Abnormalities Associated with Neurodevelopmental Disorders the authors state the “Neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), are defined by core behavioral impairments; however, subsets of individuals display a spectrum of gastrointestinal (GI) abnormalities. We demonstrate GI barrier defects and microbiota alterations in the maternal immune activation (MIA) mouse model that is known to display features of ASD(2).” In their study they stated (our) “findings support a gut-microbiome-brain connection in a mouse model of ASD and identify a potential probiotic therapy for GI and particular behavioral symptoms in human neurodevelopmental disorders(2).” It has long been theroized that probiotics have immunoregulatory properties the influence the mucosal lining of the intestines,   studies are now proving this theory that selective probiotics use will increase immune production of regulatory T-cells thereby increasing immune function(3).

Your Gut is Under Attack

This life giving bacteria has been under assault in the last decade with the increased use of Anti-Biotics. It only takes one days use of anti-biotics to totally wipe out the the beneficial flora in the gut. We have all seen the vicious cycle were a patient will be on a round of anti-biotics and then subsequently continue to get sick multiple times during that year. This is because while the anti-biotic kills the disease causing pathogen, in the case of a bacterial infection,  it also kills the life giving immune boosting bacteria in the gut thereby leaving you more susceptible to disease with future encounters with pathogenic bacteria, fungus and viruses. Upper Respiratory Infections (URI) are the leading cause of antibiotics prescriptions, but sadly this is a misnomer as most URI’s are not caused by a bacteria at all(4).

What can you do about it?

Now that you have this knew found knowledge of the importance of Gut flora what can you do about it? The first things is a get on a probiotics supplement that has multiple strains of bacteria, preferably at least a billion of each strain per serving. For some of you this may not be enough… If you have been deficient in your Gut Flora for to long you run the risk of having a fungal overgrowth and may need a gut cleanse prior to seeing any real improvements in the way you function and feel. Consult your doctor if you have any questions regarding the need to kill of potential pathogenic bacteria and fungus like Candida. The next thing you must do if you find your self needing to take an anti-biotic is to make sure you also take a probiotic supplement while taking the anti-biotic and after you finish the anti-biotic. You can typically take up to 3 times your normal intake of probiotics while on an anti-biotic in order to keep you reserves up. If you are not the supplement type and would rather eat from nature to get your dietary needs you will want to add in fermented foods like sauerkraut & kimche, you can also eat yogurt and kiefer all of these are a great source of good bacteria.

The Daniel Fast

The Daniel Fast

I have had the pleasure of participating in the Daniel Fast with City Church for the last two years. Take a minute and watch this video on the health benefits of the Daniel Fast. I encourage you to join me on my fast for the next 10 days. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out!

Daniel Fast Health Benefits 2014 from City Church on Vimeo.

Below is a message from the pastors of City Church.

City Church, The 10-day Daniel Fast starts tomorrow!  Remember, the main goal of fasting is to become closer to God by voluntarily denying the demands of your flesh and increasing your prayer life. When the fast is over, you should have a new spiritual strength from overcoming the cravings that usually control your life and from dedicating yourself to God.

City Church Daniel Fast Objectives:

1) Eat and drink according to the Daniel Fast for 10 days
2) Increase our prayer, Scripture reading, journaling, and quiet time
3) Meet together for a Worship and Prayer Daniel Fast Celebration night onSunday, January 26th from 6-7pm (Childcare provided)

The Information Packet includes a 10-Day Devotional for you and your family!

We encourage you to pray for the following:

1) Your Family – Protection, family members away from Christ, relationships, health, etc.
2) Your Finances – God’s blessing and providence
3) Your Church – Spiritual, numerical, and financial growth
4) Your City – Salvation, restoration, and healing will come to those in need

We are so excited to have you as a part of the church-wide Daniel Fast. We know God has great plans in store for 2014, and this is an awesome way to begin this year!
May God bless you during this incredible commitment.

Anyone with a medical condition or currently under the treatment of a physician should consult his or her doctor before starting the Daniel Fast.

“Silver Fillings” what you don’t know about them…

“Silver Fillings” or Dental Amalgams are not just the cheaper and longer lasting cavity solution!

Silver fillings also known as dental amalgams have been common practice in dentistry since the mid-1800’s. While effective at replacing the removed tooth material and preventing further decay they are extremely toxic material due to the presence of Mercury. Now, this may come as a shocker to many people reading this because it is widely known and accept the mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin.

How much mercury are we being exposed to in our “silver fillings”? It is estimated that each dental amalgam gives of approximately 15 µg of Mercury gas per dental amalgam per day! Now, this may be increased with the simple daily routine of chewing and substantially increases with the consumption of hot drinks. The heat causes the mercury gas to be released from the dental amalgam. How much mercury is it “safe” to be exposed to on a daily basis? “EPA uses a RfD of 0.1 µg/kg body weight/day as an exposure without recognized adverse effects.” – EPA So a 200 lb person (approx. 90 kg) would be able to be exposed to 0.9 µg! So one dental amalgam will release on average about 15 times the acceptable safe exposure levels described by the EPA.

Side Effects of Exposure

“Based on this prevalence for the overall U.S. population of women of reproductive age and the number of U.S. births each year, it is estimated that more than 300,000 newborns each year may have increased risk of learning disabilities associated with in utero exposure to methylmercury.”- EPA

“Inhalation of elemental mercury volatilized from dental amalgam is a major source of mercury exposure in the general population (Halbach, 1994; Kingman et al., 1998; Woods et al., 2007).”- CDC

“The health effects of mercury are diverse and can depend on the form of the mercury to which a person is exposed and the dose and the duration of exposure. Acute, high-dose exposure to elemental mercury vapor may cause severe pneumonitis. At levels below those that cause acute lung injury, overt signs and symptoms of chronic inhalation may include tremor, gingivitis, and neurocognitive and behavioral disturbances, particularly irritability, depression, short-term memory loss, fatigue, anorexia, and sleep disturbance (Bidstrup et al., 1951; Smith et al., 1970; Smith et al., 1983).”-CDC

What can you do?

First, you need to seek out a Holistic Dentist in your area who understands the dangers of Mercury Amalgams and have them removed.  Make sure they are taking precautionary measure to prevent further exposure while removing your Amalgams. For example, at a minimum, they should be using a dental dam and have ventilation to handle the mercury gasses released from the drilling process. Next, you need to seek a practitioner who is trained in testing for heavy metal toxicity, as well as help you with your detoxification process. Heavy metals can have a significant effect on the physiological processes of the body, one simple way to measure the effects of heavy metals is to do a Urine Porphyrin test which is available in my office. Another simple test I perform in my office is a hair analysis to determine if there is a presence of any heavy metals including mercury. There are many natural chelators as well, they are dependent on each patient’s presentation and level of toxicity.

If you have a question about the assessment for heavy metal toxicity and the different treatment options please call me at the office. Ten minute consultations are free so there are no pressure or money worries if you just want to see if this is even the right next step for you.
